Biraja Temple: The Shakti Peetha of Jajpur

On the banks of the Baitarani river in Jajpur district stands one of India’s 51 Shakti Peethas — the Biraja Temple, where tradition holds that Sati’s navel fell. The town’s very name (Yajapura, “city of the sacrifice”) encodes its mythic density.

Legend

After Daksha’s yajna, Vishnu’s discus scattered Sati’s body across the subcontinent; the navel landed here, and the goddess took residence as Biraja Mahabhairavi, worshipped alongside her consort Jagannath (a rare shared cult). The Brahma and Skanda Puranas praise Biraja Kshetra, and Hindu tradition holds that shraddha (ancestral offerings) performed at the Baitarani equals the merit of Gaya.

The temple and image

• Devi’s icon: two-armed Mahishasuramardini, her right foot on the buffalo-demon’s chest and her left on her reclining consort Shiva — carved in black chlorite with a silver crown.
• Yoni pitha: a circular stone in the sanctum floor marking the peetha, ringed by the Sapta Matrka (seven mothers) niches.
• Festivals: Sharadiya Durga Puja climaxes with Biraja Ashtami; the town also keeps an unusual 16-day Navaratri cycle tied to the river.

Jajpur district also guards the Buddhist Diamond Triangle of Ratnagiri-Lalitgiri-Udayagiri and is a comfortable drive from Cuttack’s Barabati Fort.
