It marks the very site where Emperor Ashoka embraced non-violence after the devastating Kalinga War (261 BCE). This gleaming white peace pagoda, built in 1972 by a Japanese Buddhist organization, stands as a powerful symbol of peace and harmony.

The conflict claimed hundreds of thousands of lives, and legend says the Daya River turned red with blood. Witnessing this devastation, Ashoka’s heart transformed. He embraced Buddhism and devoted the rest of his life to spreading the message of non-violence, dharma, and peace. The rock edicts of Ashoka at Dhauli (specifically Edicts I-XIV) still bear witness to this monumental change.

Its four sides feature carved panels depicting key scenes from Buddha’s life — Gautama Buddha meditating under the Bodhi tree, Ashoka’s transformation, and the turning of the Dharma Wheel. A golden umbrella crowns the top, catching the sunlight and visible from miles around.
