The Chauhan rulers of Sambalpur worshipped Goddess Samaleswari as their presiding deity (Kuladevi). The temple derives its name from Maa Samalei, the protective goddess of Sambalpur. The name Sambalpur itself is believed to originate from Samalei — the goddess who protects the land.

Hundreds of thousands of devotees from across western Odisha gather for this occasion.
