Saura Art: The Sacred Wall Paintings of Odisha

The Saura (Savara) tribal communities of Ganjam-Gajapati paint italic — known as idital — on the walls of their homes: icon-paintings that are simultaneously art, ritual and record. With its fishbone-spine figures and monumental central icon, Saura painting has become one of the most recognised tribal art traditions in the world.

Visual grammar

• The idital: painted on the interior back wall, dedicated to the ancestors and protective spirits (iditalmarandis).
• Central icon: a fantastic animal-bird figure — often read as Garuda or a lion — that anchors the composition and “carries” the painting.
• Friezes: rows of humans, elephants, horses, trees, sunsymbols and scenes of jatras (village festivals) fill the field in registers.
• Technique: natural pigments — white from rice paste, red and yellow ochres, black from char — applied with a bamboo twig or cloth rag.

When and why

The painter — idengdamn, a ritual specialist — works without sketches, composing directly in pigment. Global recognition came through Jangarh Singh Shyam, the Pardhan artist whose Saura-inspired idiom entered major international collections.
