Chandrabhaga Beach: The Sacred Shore of Konark
Three kilometres east of the Sun Temple, where the Chandrabhaga river once met the Bay of Bengal, lies one of Odisha’s most storied beaches. Part pilgrimage site, part sunrise viewpoint, Chandrabhaga gives the Konark experience its sea-facing dimension.
Religious significance
Puranic tradition holds that Krishna’s son Shambha — cursed with leprosy — was healed here after worshipping Surya, and that the river is named for the princess Chandrabhaga who merged into these waters. Every Magha Saptami (January–February), tens of thousands of pilgrims arrive before dawn for the ritual sea-bath and offerings to the rising sun — the most dramatic sunrise crowd on India’s east coast. The beach also serves the annual Konark Dance Festival fringe events in December.
Practical notes
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Distance | ~3 km from Konark Sun Temple, 30 km from Puri |
| Sunrise | Approximately 5:10–6:10 am through the year — the signature experience |
| Swimming | Strong currents; lifeguards patrol the flagged stretch only |
| Nearby | Morning fish-landing at Kuruma and the Chandrabhaga lighthouse viewpoint |
Pair it with the Sun Temple itself — a 15-minute walk inland — and extend the coastal run to Gopalpur-on-Sea in the south or the vanishing-sea phenomenon at Chandipur in the north.
