Konark Dance Festival
Every December 1–5, the floodlit Sun Temple at Konark becomes the most dramatic dance backdrop in India. The Konark Dance Festival, organised by Odisha Tourism since 1989, brings five nights of classical and folk performance to an open-air auditorium facing the 13th-century UNESCO World Heritage monument.
History
The festival was created to stage India’s classical arts against architecture that itself celebrates them: the temple walls of Konark are encyclopaedias of dance, carved with musicians and dance mudras in their hundreds. Alongside the dance festival runs the Indian Festival / Crafts Mela, a national fair of handicrafts and cottage industries that gives the event its carnival atmosphere.
The venue itself
Built around 1250 CE by Ganga-king Narasimhadeva I as a colossal stone chariot for the sun god Surya, the temple was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Its 24 carved wheels functioned as sundials, its jagamohana once rose over 60 metres, and its sculptures of muses (mithuna), war horses and elephants rank among medieval India’s finest. Our detailed treatment is in the Konark Sun Temple guide, with the adjacent Chandrabhaga beach and Bhubaneswar’s gem, the Mukteswar temple, covered separately.
