Dola Purnima: Odisha’s Festival of Colour

On the full moon of Phalguna (February–March), Odisha celebrates its own Holi — Dola Purnima — a six-day spring festival that is as much about processional worship as it is about colour. Where northern India throws colour on a single day, Odisha takes its deities out on decorated palanquins called vimana through village after village.

The six-day calendar

The festival opens on Dola Purnima and runs roughly five more days, closing with the deities’ return. The centrepiece is the melana — a gathering of palanquins from many villages at a common ground, where idols of Jagannath, Krishna, Radha or the village goddess are swung together, offered phagua songs, and drenched in coloured powder (abira) and sweetened curd. Drums (dhol), mridanga and cymbals drive the famous phaguna gita repertoire through the nights.

Where the celebrations peak

Every Jagannath, Shakti and Shaiva shrine joins in.
