Chandan Yatra is a major annual festival of the Jagannath Temple in Puri, celebrated over 42 days. Starting from Akshaya Tritiya, it is the longest festival of Shri Mandir. During this sacred observance, Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are anointed with sandalwood paste (chandan) and taken for a ritual boat ride in the Narendra Pushkarini, the temple’s sacred pond.

The tradition of Chandan Yatra dates back hundreds of years, observed since the Gajapati dynasty era. In ancient times, sandalwood paste was applied to the deities to protect them from the scorching summer heat. This tradition gradually evolved into a grand public celebration. The Narendra Pushkarini, the sacred temple pond, was specifically constructed for this festival’s water rituals and boat processions.
ଦୁଇ ଭାଗ: ଭିତର ଚନ୍ଦନ ଓ ବାହାର ଚନ୍ଦନTwo Phases: Inner and Outer Chandan

Chandan Yatra is celebrated in two phases. The first 21 days are Bhitara Chandan (Inner Chandan), held inside the Shri Mandir premises. During this period, the deities are anointed with sandalwood paste, accompanied by dance, music, and devotional performances. The next 21 days are Bahara Chandan (Outer Chandan), where representative idols are taken to the Narendra Pushkarini and rowed on beautifully decorated boats called “Chapa” — shaped like swans, elephants, and other sacred forms.

The most captivating part of Bahara Chandan is the boat festival at Narendra Pushkarini. Each evening, the deities are placed on ornately decorated boats called “Chapa” — crafted in the shapes of swans, elephants, and other sacred forms — and rowed around the sacred pond. Devotees gather on the banks for darshan. Musicians and dancers perform both on the boats and on the banks, creating an unforgettable spectacle of devotion and artistry under the open sky.

Chandan Yatra is not merely a festival — it is a symbol of devotion, seva (service), and surrender. Sandalwood represents coolness and purity. Over these 42 days, the temple hosts special bhog offerings, aarti ceremonies, and Sahana Mela (public darshan). Each afternoon, the deities receive fresh sandalwood application, followed by evening musical performances featuring traditional Odissi music and mardala percussion. Chandan Yatra precedes the grand Rath Yatra and is deeply intertwined with the sacred Mahaprasad tradition of Puri.

The Gajapati Maharaja of Puri personally participates in the rituals.
